Por considerar a reeleição um problema no atual sistema político brasileiro, embora líder nas pesquisas, anunciou que não iria concorrer a um novo mandato e indicou sua vice-prefeita Paula Mascarenhas como candidata. Paula venceu a eleição municipal de 2016, em primeiro turno, pela primeira vez em Pelotas com aproximadamente 112 mil votos. Estudou políticas públicas na Columbia University, em NY, EUA, cursa mestrado em gestão pública na FGV.
