The spread of the coronavirus is leading Latin America to a weak economic growth in 2020, but economic and political systems in the region were already under strain. Investors acknowledge a high degree of uncertainty as local authorities estimate the pandemic will pick about midyear. Economies throughout Latin America will depend heavily on foreign investment and demand for primary commodities, such as oil and copper, but these two factors may be at risk as the world economy grinds to a halt. GRI Infra Latam members will gather to discuss a macro analysis on what paths the region is following given recent measures announced by local authorities and how they are copying with the COVID-19 outbreak.
How is Latin America responding to the crisis compared to other regions?
Are there risks for a prolonged crisis in the region?
What impacts fiscal support packages and depreciation of local currencies will have in the medium- and long-term?
What risks are there to watch out when Latam economies start their recovery from this crisis?

Rodrigo Franco is a Managing Director in Brookfield’s Infrastructure Group, responsible for originating, executing and overseeing investments in Chile and Peru. He joined Brookfield in 2010 and has since played a key role in the execution of many significant transactions in Latin America. Mr. Franco serves as the Chairman of the Board of Rutas de Lima and as a Board member of Autopista Vespucio Norte. Prior to joining Brookfield, Mr. Franco worked at Credit Suisse’s Leveraged Finance Restructuring and Origination Group in New York and at BCP's Corporate Finance Group in Lima, Peru. Mr. Franco holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from Universidad del Pacífico in Lima, Peru, an MBA from Stanford Graduate School of Government.
