John Phelan
Biography
John Phelan is the Co-Founder and Co-Managing Partner of MSD Capital, L.P., a private investment firm established in 1998 to manage the capital of Michael Dell and his family. Under his leadership, MSD Capital achieved double-digit net returns, generated over $20 billion in profits, and grew assets under management to over $30 billion. Prior to co-founding MSD Capital, Phelan served as a Principal for seven years at ESL Partners, where he specialized in Special Situation and Distressed Investments, contributing to the firm's growth from $50 million to over $2 billion in assets under management. He also held a role as Vice President in the Equity Group, overseeing acquisitions for the Zell-Merrill Lynch Real Estate Opportunity Funds. Phelan began his career as an Analyst in the Investment Banking Division at Goldman, Sachs & Co. He holds an MBA from Harvard Business School and a B.A. in Economics and Political Science from Southern Methodist University.
